“This fig tree is more than
a landmark, it is a keeper of
memory, a symbol of resistance
and continuity. Sharing its story
invites a deeper understanding
of place and the unbroken ties
between people, land, and
culture.”

The proposal celebrates the Oldest Fig in Parramatta as a living anchor of cultural identity, resilience, and memory. A radial deck invites gathering and knowledge-sharing beneath its canopy, while playful elements engage with the fig’s exposed roots, encouraging connection with Country.
Surrounding heritage features, including Perth House and historic drainage channels, are respectfully integrated into the landscape to reflect the site’s layered colonial and First Nations histories. A central through-site link connects Barrack Lane to the tree, forming a clear and inclusive pedestrian spine. The expanded public realm is enriched with native planting to enhance biodiversity, support climate resilience, and create a distinctive, expressive urban landscape that invites movement, gathering, and community connection.
