The Angophora

Written by Ranine Hamed

Situated on Cammeray Country, The Angophora draws inspiration from its natural surroundings, particularly the native angophora tree.

Land and Form approached the landscape design as a cohesive ecology, aiming to support all forms of life. Key features include:

Native Planting: Emphasis on indigenous flora to promote biodiversity and resilience.

Deep Soil Zones: Incorporation of 726 square meters of deep soil planting to support mature tree growth.

Green Communal Spaces: 1,865 square meters of communal open space, fostering community interaction and well-being.

The architectural design complements the landscape, featuring two residential towers of 33 and 23 storeys, connected by a three-storey commercial podium. The material palette, described as "rich, robust, and refined," draws from the textures and hues of the angophora tree. Brickwork at the podium level reflects the character of the adjacent heritage conservation area, creating a dialogue between the new development and its historical context.

The Angophora exemplifies how collaborative efforts between architects and landscape architects can lead to developments that are environmentally responsive, culturally respectful, and socially inclusive. By placing landscape at the forefront of the design process, the project sets a precedent for future urban developments in Sydney and beyond.
