George St Parramatta Competition Win!
Written by Ro Iyer
In a rapidly evolving Parramatta CBD, the site holds a rare moment of natural beauty, elevated above the Parramatta River and framed by a rich and layered context. It sits beside the heritage-listed Harrisford House to the west, the foreshore park to the north, and a future adjoining development to the east.
A series of strategic design moves shape the public domain, landscape, built form, and communal spaces, creating a place that is both highly responsive to context and generous in experience.
The proposal celebrates the post-colonial heritage significance of Harrisford House by enhancing its setting and establishing a welcoming public realm that reconnects people with the site’s historical identity. Strong, seamless connections between George Street, the heritage precinct and the river foreshore activate the urban edge and invite everyday movement, exchange and public life.
The landscape draws people down toward the Parramatta River, unfolding as an immersive sequence that reveals the site’s ecological character. Protected mangroves, rich planting and moments of engagement with the foreshore create a memorable relationship between people and place, strengthening awareness of the river’s environmental value.
Together, heritage, connectivity and ecology are woven into a resilient landscape framework that supports both present and future generations.
Above, the towers rise from an expansive communal landscape podium, where native palms and a dense planted understory establish a biophilic base to the built form. This elevated garden setting is paired with high-end, resort-style amenity including pools, breakout spaces and internal communal rooms, offering residents a rich and restorative living experience deeply connected to landscape.
