Telstra Park

Description

The rejuvenation of Telstra Park has transformed an underutilised rooftop into a vibrant communal garden terrace in the heart of the CBD, supporting the return to office life in a post-COVID environment. The project establishes a contemporary “third space”, one that sits between work and home, where landscape and workplace seamlessly intersect to promote wellbeing, collaboration, and everyday connection to nature.

Central to the design is the creation of a biophilic environment that encourages staff to step outside, engage with colleagues, and experience moments of respite within a dense urban setting.

The proposed landscape for Telstra Park is underpinned by a series of design principles that prioritise connection, wellbeing, and environmental resilience. At its core, the design seeks to reconnect people with nature through a rich, immersive landscape that draws on the qualities of parkland and layered planting. This biophilic approach is complemented by a strong emphasis on social interaction and collaboration, creating spaces that encourage gathering, exchange, and shared experiences within a workplace setting.

Inclusivity is fundamental to the design, with spaces that are accessible, flexible, and supportive of a wide range of users and activities. The landscape also acknowledges and responds to Country, embedding a deeper connection to place through materiality, planting, and spatial experience. Sustainability is integrated throughout, with a focus on regenerative strategies, robust material selection, and planting that contributes to biodiversity and long-term ecological performance.

These principles are expressed through a series of interconnected zones that offer both moments of pause and restoration as well as active and flexible uses which accommodate social gatherings, working collaborations and meeting spaces.

Core to the space's success was the close collaboration with furniture designers Outside Assembly. Working in tandem with the landscape concept and Telstra’s recent rebranding, the team developed a bespoke suite of flexible, modular furniture that seamlessly integrates with the terrace environment. The collection responds to both functional and social needs, enabling a variety of settings for working, gathering, and relaxation.

The furniture palette adds a vibrant, playful layer to the landscape, reinforcing the space's identity while enhancing its usability and adaptability. Through careful consideration of form, materiality, and colour, the design achieves a cohesive relationship between built elements and planting, ensuring the terrace reads as a unified and engaging environment.
